Mastering Your Holiday Fitness and Nutrition - Tip #2

How to stick to the plan during the crazy season.

Part 2

If you missed Part 1 you can read it here!

End of the year celebrations, travel, visiting family and friends, awesome family meals...all of this can be stressful and make you feel like the hard work you put into your health and fitness the rest of the year will be sabotaged.

You'll think it's going to be impossible to maintain your workouts, impossible to avoid gaining weight, and end up going into the New Year guilting yourself into killing yourself in the gym three hours a day, eating kale chips, and drinking smoothies.

We all know how long that kind of "all or nothing" extremism lasts - maybe a couple weeks? A month?

That's why I wanted to put together this series of tips to help you make it through the end of the year craziness with your hard work, and hopefully, your sanity intact.

I see it happen all the time...heck it's even happened to me at times...

You're doing great all year. You're doing well with your nutrition, making sure to make time to workout regularly, and then life smacks you in the face -

A vacation...

or

A business trip...

or

A long trip over the holidays...

Or anything else that life can throw at us. Unfortunately, some of us just fall off the wagon altogether after these minor setbacks.

We miss our Monday and Wednesday workouts. Then Friday comes and we've been out of town and our friends want to go out to dinner - sure, why not?

You tell yourself - "well, I missed Monday and Wednesday, I might as well just get in a workout on Saturday and actually have fun tonight for once".

Then it's Saturday. Pfft...yea, like I'm going to get out of bed to go exercise after all the fun I had last night. "I'll just start over Monday"! Besides, no one ever starts anything on Sunday right?

Then you wake up and look in the mirror 3 months later wondering why you look worse than you did 6 months ago, and how you even got this way.

Really? All because I missed a couple workouts?

I know, it sounds extreme. But you would be surprised how many times I have seen it happen. Or maybe not, because I'd be willing to bet that everyone has experienced this to some degree at one time or another.

We've used these tips and strategies ourselves, and given them to our Size Healthy Coaching clients so that they can have fun while making the most out of their holidays AND their healthy and fitness journey. Now we want to give them to everyone.

Tip #2 - Getting in a few workout sessions.

Getting in a training session during a busy time of the year doesn't have to be time consuming. It doesn't even have to be hard, or require equipment. Here's a quick bodyweight program you can do in 10 minutes just to keep you moving when you can't make it to your gym.

  1. Complete each exercise in the sequence listed.

  2. Do 5-8 reps of each exercise.

  3. Don't rest between exercises.

  4. Rest 1 minute or as long as needed after each round.

  5. Repeat for 2-5 rounds.

Bear Crawl

Lunge (reverse, or forward)

Push-up

Bodyweight Squat

Mountain Climber

Step-up

Remember, the key is to just keep moving. 10 minutes a day, you don't have to try to make gains while you're at your busiest, or on the road.

You can still enjoy your holidays while easily maintaining everything you've been working hard for!
